Marrakech mayhem — just go with it!

Marrakech (Marrakesh in English) seems to have got this reputation for being somewhere to go if you like shopping in markets full of men without an understanding of personal space. Nothing is further from the truth — the people (men included) are friendly, helpful and respectful of your cultural differences, especially if you are the same to them.

So, why did we choose to visit Marrakech and why were we so intrigued by it despite this reputation? Well, first up we’re not the type of people to completely rely on other people’s views — we’ve got to form our own opinions based on our own experiences — a theme you’ll find throughout our travels and the reason for this blog. Secondly, Christmas in the UK has become so commercialised, that for us its a great time of year to get away — we don’t celebrate Christmas, and although we do love a family get together, as the saying goes “a family is not just for Christmas…” or is that dogs? Anyway family meals shouldn’t just be once a year when shops and TV commercials dictate the timing to you, they can and should happen any time of the year, so actually getting away for Christmas is a great time for us, plus in the UK it’s usually wet and cold in December.

Practically, December in Marrakech is relatively warm with daytime temperatures reaching about 20 degrees Celsius (about 70 degrees Fahrenheit). With little rain, that’s perfect weather for getting out and about, and exploring a city like Marrakech. From the UK, you can get reasonably priced direct flights.

Culturally, we love travelling to such rich places and couldn’t wait to just get lost in the walled Medina (old town) and its maze of souks, history, restaurants and bars.
